DragonflySoul: Litter Police and Troublemaker

i had to check a grown woman yesterday for dropping a newspaper on the ground, looking down at it, and then leaving it there.

we were standing on the corner waiting for the light to change. she dropped her newspaper on the ground. i gave her several seconds, thinking she was going to finish rifling through her purse and THEN bend down and pick it up. she looked down at the newspaper, zipped up her bag, and then stood there, looking across the street. seeing as how the light was about to change for us, i had to act. she had no intention of picking it up.

so i, being the annoying, do-gooder that i am, kindly looked her square in her small eyes, smiled a huge, patronizing grin, and asked: "is that your newspaper?" as i pointed to her litter on the ground. she stared at me blankly for several seconds as if she was crazy enough to contemplate saying something sarcastic.

and deep inside that blank stare, i could see that delightful glimmer of annoyance and defiance that people get when they detest being corrected by someone else. oh the pleasure i felt! for those few seconds, i felt intoxicated.

but you better believe that, without a word, little miss litter bug bent her behind over and picked up that darned newspaper. and i, feeling strangely victorious that i saw and corrected a crime, again stared her square in her small eyes, smiled a huge, patronizing grin, and happily strutted across the street as the little glowing man told me it was time for us to "WALK".

i half expected to feel that newspaper slam into my shoulder blades as i walked away. but no one's THAT crazy, are they?

would that i were an undercover cop. i can't tell you how many times i've wanted to flash my lights and pull someone over who i've just seen tossing a McDonald's bag or cup out of a moving car. people are so ignorant. just once, i'd love the pleasure of watching someone kick and scream as i give them a $1000 fine for littering.
