who is the "Us?"

so the other day, i sat and talked with my new favorite homeless guy. most days he's camped out near my work building so i see him all the time.

i love talking to him, but he will talk your ear off so be prepared to spend the better part of an hour and a half hanging out. we sit and talk about his life - his life story is fascinating, and the man is absolutely hilarious. he's an awesome storyteller and shares intimate details of his life with me (some that i'd reaaaally rather he leave out, LOL). he tells me about his children, his past relationships. i ask him how he ended up here, where he's going now. he asks me about my life, where i've been, where i'm going.

so i prayed for the Lord to open a window of opportunity to witness to him - i'll call him "Music" - about Christ. homeless people are often overlooked and forgotten and it's easy to toss them some food or some cash. but we (including myself) forget to remember that they too have souls. and they too need to hear the good news of Christ Jesus.

but i'm no skilled evangelist. i never ever know how to approach the subject and i'm certainly no biblical scholar who knows every Scripture off the top of her head. so i just prayed and allow God to move the conversation in that direction in His time. and He did - did He ever! it was amazing watching it unfold. and it was Music who first brought up the subject of spirituality.

he told me he was a lover of all "religions" - he's open to everything. but he also told me he hangs out in a nearby DC church sometimes and goes to their bible study. he asked me if i go to church. i shared a bit of my testimony and i asked him if he understood that Jesus died for him and his sins, that He was buried and rose again and that we now have salvation extended to us through Him, if we accept Him.

Music said he believed all that (though i'm not quite sure he does), but he's so angry with God about so many things and he has so many questions. he wonders why the world is the way that it is. why there is so much corruption and evil and pain. i tried to explain to him that satan is the author of evil and the reason we are in the state we're in. but that God is still the author and finisher of all and is still in control. he said he wants to "tell God about Himself." i encouraged him to do so, to yell out and pour out to God every frustration and question he has - in a reverent and respectful way (lol). i tried to convince Him that God wants his attention just as much as he wants God's. but let him know that God isn't going to yell over him - he has to be open enough to hear what the Lord says.

but Music said he didn't think God would listen to him. that broke my heart. i'm not sure i convinced him that if he sincerely sought after God, sincerely asked God to speak to Him and reveal Himself to him, and if he opened his heart to receive, that God would speak. but Music is so angry i don't think he wants to hear any of that.

though it hurts me to know that there are so many people out there who don't come to the Lord because they feel God won't accept them, i left that conversation feeling not saddened nor defeated but feeling exuberant, that the Lord planted a seed. and He is the greatest harvester alive.

interestingly though (and the reason behind this post), Music seemed to have quite a bit of Bible knowledge. but like many who haven't yet "met" Christ, he doubts so many things in Scripture, questions this, doesn't believe that, and tries to pick apart every single line and find contradiction and reason to not believe.

and Music declared that he doesn't believe there is just one God.

one reason, he pointed out, is that in Genesis, there is a passage, where God is creating man, where the Bible alludes to there being more than one God by saying "us" when God is speaking. and lo and behold, i looked it up and wouldn't you know! Genesis 1:26 reads, "And God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.' "

my initial explanation to Music was that the "us" and "our" could be God referring to Himself and Jesus - because the Bible states that "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." so even before Jesus's birth on earth, He existed in Heaven with the Father.

but i'm curious about other interpretations of that scripture. who is the "us" and the "our" that man's image is modeled after, that God spoke of in Genesis?

just to be clear, this has not caused me to question my faith. there is One God, in three persons - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. i'm just very curious about this Scripture now, because i've never even given it thought before.
