confession of an infidel

last night, i stopped at my favorite Indian restaurant for some much needed curried comfort food.
i love the people who work there - they are some of the sweetest most accommodating people i know. and whoever the chef is - my LORD! - he could be my husband. i would happily gain 30 lbs to be able to eat like that every night!

*sidebar* why do i have such an adventurous spirit when it comes to foreign cuisine, trying new things, going new places - yet i seem to attract guys who are the exact opposite and won't go to any restaurant that doesn't end in 'S (think Bennigan's, Friday's, Ruby Tuesday's) or won't go anywhere that doesn't serve burgers and chicken fingers?? UGH.

where are the (single, non-crazy) guys who will come sit on some floor pillows with me and watch belly dancers at a Moroccan restaurant, share a plate with me an at Ethiopian establishment, enjoy some saki at a Japanese joint? all i get are the chicken fingers and ketchup bunch. woe :-(

Jesus, please make my husband be someone who will at least try something new. even if he hates it, i'll love him for trying. but if you make him to be someone who actually likes the food, i'll love him even more. In Your name, Amen.

anyway, so i'm waiting for my food, being flirted with by the absolutely-adorable-SO-could-get-my-number Indian host guy, who is marveling at my hair and asking me all kinds of questions, and watching the cutest little girl running around laughing with one of the servers (there was hardly anyone seated in the restaurant, don't worry).

and the cute Indian SO-could-get-my-number guy leaves and brings me back a to-go cup of some orange concoction and says "Here, try this." so, grateful that he kindly gave me something to drink, for free, while i waited for my food, i thanked him and asked what it was. he said it was a yogurt, mango and banana smoothie.

well, the yogurt part pretty much means "dairy," which this vegan of course does not do.

BUT he was being so nice to me, he was so accommodating and went out of his way to do that, i couldn't bear to refuse the drink and tell him that i don't consume dairy products. i thought it would have been ÜBER rude. so i took it, thanked him and smiled.

and then i took a sip, as he stood there watching, asking if i liked it.

yes...YES...i liked it, OK?!!! it was delicious, all mangoey and bananafied.

i'm a cheater, you happy?! i can never show my face on a vegan forum again. the things i do to please a hot guy...sheesh.

thankfully, he left to go attend to someone else, so i sat there holding the cup and intermittently putting the straw in my mouth, pretending i was still enjoying my cowy drink.

but i felt so...cheap. so wrong. so unfaithful. i've been vegan for 8 years - how could i?? ok, i'm being dramatic. but still, i felt kinda bad. i guess it's like if a vegetarian for some reason ate a bite of fish or chicken or turkey something. even a small amount, you feel so ....wrong.

so i tossed the cup away when i got home. and later, i felt a pang of heartburn (probably because my aloo gobhi was spicy enough to down an elephant) but you KNOW i blamed it on that sinful sip of that yogurt smoothie!!

don't tell anyone about this ok? let's cast this into the sea of forgetfulness. i'll never live this down - that i, dragonfly, am a vegan infidel.
