my gosh, i just found out some very scary stuff about someone i know last night.
it's amazing, utterly amazing, how you think you know people.... but the only One truly knows our hearts and what we do when no one is around is God.
you can think you know your spouse, mother, father, sister or brother, best friend or boyfriend all you want...but no matter how awesome they are and have been all your lives, what do you really know about what is in their hearts?
nothing.
you only know what they allow you to see. of course, for those in Christ, we can certainly feel God's spirit in other people truly rooted in Him and His word. but even given that, we only know what we see manifested through their character, words and actions. we don't know if the Word has really been written on their hearts. we don't know if their heart truly belongs to God and if they believe what they say they believe.
be cause we can't ever know their hearts.
i found out someone i know (who incidentally is NOT a believer) seriously is leading a double life. into some very illegal and very scary stuff. you NEVER in a million years would have expected that from this person. like everyone else who finds out someone they know has this whole other persona and life, you always say, "but he/she is so...NICE...!"
but "Nice" is a surface quality.
though i wish i could see into the hearts to help avoid getting mixed up with the wrong folks, it really is such a merciful blessing to not have that power. can you imagine the burden of being able to know all the ins and outs of a person's heart?
scary.
HOW in the world does God DO this every day, all day, for every person on the planet?? we look at the news, tv shows, newspapers and we read a glimpse of the evil in the world. but what we see is only a teeny tiny fraction of all that really goes on in the hearts, minds, homes and nations of the world.
can you imagine what God sees everyday??
i'm so glad i don't have His job.
though i have done my typical and gone off on a tangent, i say all this to say that we are fools to put our trust in men. the Bible warns us against doing so. sure, we can't be paranoid and bitter, thinking everyone is out to do us harm. BUT no matter how much we love someone, we are better off putting the bulk of our trust in God alone. because even those closest to us have the capability to fall so far down that we think it unimaginable.
but it's not unimaginable. the only One not capable of falling into darkness is God alone.
still, it's so scary. because you want to trust people. we all do. we marry someone because we feel we can trust them. we listen to people and allow them special places in our lives because we feel we can trust them. our hearts want to connect with people that deeply.
so what do you do when someone you have trusted and loved turns out to be this whole other hidden person that you never ever knew?
it's scary to know that anyone you know really could be doing something you had no idea about.
no idea. we are clueless. thank God for His omniscience.
